Colombian Presidential Candidate Survives Assassination Attempt Amid Election

Bogotá, Colombia — June 8, 2025
Colombia was rocked by political violence on Sunday after a leading presidential candidate, Senator Camilo Reyes, was shot during a campaign rally in the coastal city of Barranquilla. The assassination attempt comes just weeks ahead of a pivotal national election, raising concerns over security and political stability in the South American nation.

Reyes, a center-left candidate known for his anti-corruption stance and outspoken criticism of organized crime, was addressing a crowd of supporters when multiple gunshots rang out. Chaos erupted as bodyguards shielded the senator and rushed him to a waiting vehicle. According to initial reports from the Interior Ministry, Reyes was hit in the shoulder but is in stable condition after emergency surgery at a local hospital.

“This was a direct attack on democracy,” said Interior Minister Laura Martínez in a televised address. “The government will not tolerate political violence, and we are mobilizing all available resources to find those responsible.”

Video footage captured the moment the shots were fired, showing a panicked crowd scattering and campaign staff dragging Reyes away from the podium. Authorities later confirmed that one suspect had been apprehended near the scene, while a manhunt continues for at least two other individuals believed to have been involved.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, officials suspect possible links to criminal organizations that have faced growing scrutiny under Reyes’ proposed policies to dismantle narco-financing networks and reform the national police.

Reyes, 48, rose to prominence as an anti-graft senator and former human rights lawyer. His campaign has focused on economic equality, strengthening democratic institutions, and rebuilding trust in Colombia’s political system after years of scandal and unrest.

President Gustavo López condemned the shooting, calling it “an act of cowardice against a candidate who represents hope for many Colombians.”

Political analysts warn the incident could heighten tensions ahead of the June 30 vote, with fears of further violence or voter suppression in rural areas.

Despite the attack, Reyes’ campaign issued a statement saying he remains “determined to continue his run and fight for a just Colombia.”

“He may be injured, but his resolve is stronger than ever,” the statement read.

An emergency security summit has been called for Monday, and the National Electoral Council is reviewing additional safety measures for all presidential candidates.
