Pope Francis expressed deep sorrow over the death of a priest killed in Lebanon and renewed his appeal for peace across the conflict-stricken Middle East.
In a message released by the Holy See, the pontiff offered condolences to the family, parishioners, and community of the slain clergyman, describing the loss as a painful reminder of the human cost of the ongoing violence in the region.
The priest was reportedly killed amid escalating tensions and military strikes in Lebanon, where clashes along the border and the broader regional conflict have increasingly endangered civilians and religious institutions.
During his remarks, Pope Francis prayed for the soul of the deceased priest and urged all sides involved in the conflict to pursue dialogue instead of violence.
“I entrust the victim to God’s mercy and pray that the Lord may welcome him into His eternal peace,” the pope said, while also asking the faithful to pray for stability and reconciliation throughout the Middle East.
The pontiff also expressed solidarity with Christian communities in Lebanon, many of whom have been caught in the crossfire as tensions between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah continue to escalate.
Religious leaders and humanitarian organizations have warned that the intensifying conflict risks worsening the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, where economic hardship and political instability have already strained communities.
Pope Francis concluded his message by calling on world leaders to intensify diplomatic efforts to end the violence, stressing that peace and respect for human life must remain the priority.
“As the suffering of innocent people grows,” he said, “the world must renew its commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and lasting peace in the Middle East.”
