Rabat – March 2, 2026
The Kingdom of Belgium has reiterated its firm and consistent support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as “the most adequate, serious, credible, and realistic basis” for achieving a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
This position was expressed by Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, Maxime Prévot, following talks in Rabat with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.
Continuity with Joint Declaration
Prévot emphasized that Belgium’s stance aligns with the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025, reaffirming Brussels’ recognition of the existential importance of the Sahara issue for the Kingdom of Morocco. He underscored that Belgium firmly situates the Sahara region within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.
The Belgian Foreign Minister further stressed that his country intends to act in accordance with this position at both diplomatic and economic levels, noting that Belgium’s approach remains consistent with international law.
Expanding Economic and Diplomatic Initiatives
As part of this commitment, Belgium announced that its Ambassador in Rabat will soon visit the Sahara region to help prepare and support several economic initiatives. These include facilitating visits by Belgian companies and organizing trade fairs in coordination with the region’s three development agencies.
In addition, Belgium confirmed that its Consulate General in Rabat maintains jurisdiction over the entire Moroccan territory, without regional distinction, including the Sahara. This ensures continued consular coverage for Belgian nationals residing in or traveling to the region.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Prévot’s visit to Rabat reflects the positive momentum in relations between Belgium and Morocco, marked by sustained political dialogue and a shared ambition to deepen a strategic partnership. Both countries have expressed their commitment to advancing cooperation based on mutual respect and convergence of views on key regional and international issues.
The reaffirmation of Belgium’s support for the autonomy initiative signals not only diplomatic continuity but also a readiness to translate political alignment into concrete economic and institutional engagement.
