U.S. Marine Sentenced to 7 Years in Japan for Sexual Assault

A Japanese court has sentenced a U.S. Marine to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in Okinawa, a case that has reignited tensions over the American military presence on the island.

The incident, which occurred in 2023, involved a 23-year-old Marine stationed at a U.S. base in Okinawa. According to court documents, the assault took place in a hotel room after the Marine met the victim at a local bar. Prosecutors said the victim was intoxicated and unable to give consent. The court ruled that the Marine used force and took advantage of the victim’s vulnerable state.

During the trial, the Marine admitted to having sexual contact with the woman but claimed it was consensual. However, the court found his testimony inconsistent and sided with the prosecution, citing the victim’s testimony, security footage, and forensic evidence.

The case has sparked public outrage in Okinawa, where the majority of U.S. troops in Japan are stationed. Local residents and activists have long complained about crime, noise, and accidents linked to the American military presence. Protests broke out following the verdict, with demonstrators demanding stricter controls on U.S. personnel and greater accountability.

Japanese officials have formally lodged a protest with U.S. authorities, calling the crime “unforgivable” and urging greater discipline among troops. In response, the U.S. military expressed regret over the incident and said it is cooperating fully with Japanese law enforcement.

“We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and expect the highest standards of conduct from our service members,” a U.S. Forces Japan spokesperson said in a statement.

The Marine is expected to serve his sentence in a Japanese prison under the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), which governs how American military personnel are handled under Japanese law.

This case adds to a long history of legal and political friction between Japan and the U.S. over incidents involving American troops. As the U.S. and Japan maintain a critical security alliance in the Asia-Pacific region, cases like this continue to test the delicate balance between national security cooperation and local accountability.
