Morocco Boosts Ghana’s Agriculture with Major Fertilizer Donation

Accra, June 8, 2025 — In a powerful gesture of African solidarity and cooperation, Morocco has pledged 2,000 tons of fertilizer to Ghana to help support the West African nation’s food security initiatives amid rising global agricultural challenges.

The donation, officially announced during a bilateral meeting between Moroccan and Ghanaian officials in Accra, is part of a broader effort by Morocco to bolster food production and resilience across the African continent.

The fertilizer, produced by Morocco’s OCP Group — one of the world’s leading phosphate-based fertilizer manufacturers — is expected to benefit thousands of Ghanaian farmers, particularly smallholders grappling with high input costs and unpredictable weather patterns.

Strengthening African Agricultural Ties

Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil, described the initiative as a “concrete example of South-South cooperation in action,” emphasizing Morocco’s commitment to contributing to sustainable agriculture across Africa.

“This is not just a gift — it’s a partnership,” Ambassador Ouaadil said during the handover ceremony. “Our goal is to strengthen the agricultural base of our African neighbors and ensure that no country faces food insecurity alone.”

Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, welcomed the donation, calling it timely and impactful. “This support will go a long way in boosting crop yields this season,” he said. “It also reflects the deep and growing ties between Ghana and Morocco.”

Fertilizer Crisis and Regional Solutions

Fertilizer shortages have hit African nations hard in recent years, driven by global supply chain disruptions, the conflict in Ukraine, and escalating costs. Experts warn that without affordable access to inputs like fertilizers, African farmers face declining yields, food inflation, and rural poverty.

Morocco, home to over 70% of the world’s phosphate reserves, has emerged as a crucial player in helping the continent mitigate these risks. Through OCP Africa, Morocco has initiated a series of public-private partnerships, including fertilizer donations, knowledge-sharing programs, and agritech investments.

Looking Ahead

The fertilizer delivery is scheduled to begin within the coming weeks, with priority given to food-producing regions in Ghana most affected by soil nutrient depletion.

This latest initiative aligns with Morocco’s larger vision of promoting food security and self-sufficiency in Africa — a cornerstone of King Mohammed VI’s Africa-focused diplomacy.

As Ghana prepares for the upcoming planting season, this act of solidarity from Morocco is expected to significantly contribute to boosting local food production and further solidify the strong diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
