Rabat – The Republic of Iraq has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, while also commending the international backing for the autonomy plan as a solution to the Moroccan Sahara dispute.
This commitment was expressed by Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein during a joint press briefing with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita. Hussein praised Morocco’s efforts in seeking a political resolution aligned with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Iraq Praises Morocco’s Efforts in Supporting Palestine
During the discussions, Iraq also lauded the efforts of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, in defending the Palestinian cause. Fuad Hussein highlighted Morocco’s consistent support for the residents of Al-Quds, particularly through humanitarian initiatives carried out by the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Asharif Agency.
The visit, taking place from February 5 to 9 at Bourita’s invitation, marks the first bilateral visit of Iraq’s foreign minister since taking office.
Morocco and Iraq Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening Relations
Both nations expressed a firm determination to revitalize and deepen their bilateral ties, emphasizing economic cooperation and investment opportunities. They acknowledged the positive momentum in their relations, exemplified by Morocco’s reopening of its embassy in Iraq on January 28, 2023, after an 18-year hiatus.
To further cement ties, the two ministers agreed to initiate the first round of political consultations and convene the Morocco-Iraq Joint Commission. A memorandum of understanding was signed, granting mutual visa exemptions for diplomatic passport holders.
Shared Regional and International Interests
On regional and international matters, Morocco and Iraq stressed the need for ongoing consultation and coordination, particularly on Arab and Palestinian issues. Both reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state based on the 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as its capital.
Regarding Syria, the two sides expressed a shared commitment to upholding Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty while supporting a political process that includes all factions.
