Rabat, January 29, 2025 – Belgium has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as a credible and serious foundation for resolving the Sahara issue, according to Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Quintin.
Speaking at a press conference in Rabat after discussions with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Quintin emphasized Belgium’s recognition of the autonomy proposal, originally presented in 2007, as “a very good basis for a solution accepted by all parties.”
“These discussions allowed me to grasp the full implications of the autonomy plan and understand its existential importance for Morocco,” Quintin stated, adding that Belgium acknowledges the evolving international stance on the matter.
The Belgian minister also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the UN-led political process, stressing the importance of reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable resolution. He cited UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which highlights the need for a pragmatic and compromise-based solution, as a key reference point.
Belgium’s position reflects broader international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and aligns with the diplomatic momentum led by King Mohammed VI. Quintin confirmed that Belgium and Morocco will continue constructive engagement on this issue, reinforcing diplomatic ties between the two nations.
