RABAT, Morocco — U.S. President Donald J. Trump has reaffirmed Washington’s support for Morocco’s position on Western Sahara in a message to King Mohammed VI marking the 27th anniversary of the King’s accession to the throne, according to Morocco’s Royal Cabinet.
The message highlighted the longstanding strategic partnership between Washington and Rabat while reiterating U.S. support for Morocco’s sovereignty and its autonomy proposal as the basis for resolving the Western Sahara dispute.
According to the communiqué, President Trump extended his congratulations to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, highlighting what he described as a longstanding relationship between the United States and Morocco, built on mutual trust and respect.
The message also addressed the Western Sahara dispute. The Royal Cabinet stated that President Trump reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a basis for resolving the dispute. The communiqué quoted the message as saying that alternative approaches would prolong the status quo and that efforts should continue toward reaching what it described as a lasting solution.
President Trump also praised Morocco’s role as a regional partner, citing cooperation in areas including security, countering extremism, and efforts connected to the Abraham Accords. The message emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to promote stability and security, including in the Sahel region.
On economic relations, the communiqué said President Trump highlighted opportunities for expanded cooperation between the two countries. He reportedly pointed to Morocco’s development vision and instructed U.S. teams to support economic and social development initiatives, including projects related to Western Sahara.
Washington Signals Broader Strategic Partnership
The message from President Trump underscores the strategic depth of the relationship between Washington and Rabat at a time when Morocco continues to strengthen its diplomatic and economic partnerships around the world.
For Morocco, renewed U.S. backing on Western Sahara carries particular diplomatic significance. For the United States, the relationship with Rabat offers an established partner on security, regional stability, economic development and cooperation across Africa and the Atlantic.
The latest exchange between President Trump and King Mohammed VI therefore points to a relationship that extends well beyond the Western Sahara issue, with both countries signaling an interest in expanding their strategic partnership in the years ahead.
