PHILADELPHIA — Police have released surveillance footage of two individuals wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a Penn State student during an apparent robbery in Philadelphia.
The victim, 21-year-old William Schmidt, was shot in the chest late Saturday night while walking near a residential neighborhood in the city, according to investigators. Emergency responders transported Schmidt to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities said the shooting appeared to have occurred during an attempted robbery. Detectives believe two suspects approached Schmidt shortly before gunfire erupted. The pair fled the scene immediately after the incident and remain at large.
In an effort to identify those responsible, police on Tuesday released surveillance images and video footage showing two persons of interest seen in the area around the time of the shooting. Investigators are urging members of the public to review the footage and come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.
“We are asking anyone who recognizes these individuals or may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area to contact police immediately,” a department spokesperson said during a news briefing.
Schmidt, a student at Penn State, was remembered by friends and classmates as a dedicated student with a bright future. News of his death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the university community and beyond.
University officials expressed condolences to Schmidt’s family and said counseling services were being made available to students affected by the tragedy.
“Our hearts are with William’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the university said in a statement.
Investigators have not announced any arrests, and no additional details about the suspects have been released. Authorities continue to review surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences as they work to reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact homicide detectives or submit tips anonymously through the department’s crime tip line.
The investigation remains ongoing.
