Bern – Switzerland has expressed strong support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as the most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This position was outlined in a joint communication following talks between Ignazio Cassis, Vice-President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and Nasser Bourita, who is currently on a working visit to Bern.
In the agreed document, Switzerland reaffirmed that it views Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the most viable path toward a lasting political solution. The Swiss side also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent a highly feasible outcome.
Switzerland further reiterated its support for the central role of the United Nations in facilitating a political resolution, as well as the ongoing efforts led by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy.
The Swiss position reflects a broader international trend, as increasing numbers of countries align behind Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a realistic and pragmatic solution to the long-standing dispute. This growing consensus is part of a diplomatic momentum driven under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, aimed at reinforcing Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara while promoting a peaceful and sustainable settlement.
The development also highlights the strengthening diplomatic ties between Morocco and European partners, with Switzerland’s stance adding weight to international support for a solution based on autonomy, stability, and regional cooperation.
