Gabon Reaffirms
Rabat – April 14, 2026
The Gabonese Republic has once again reaffirmed its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, while welcoming the adoption of a key United Nations resolution recognizing the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a credible path toward resolving the regional dispute.
During a meeting in Rabat on Tuesday, Gabon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in charge of Integration and the Diaspora, Marie-Edith Tassyla-Ye-Doumbeneny, reiterated her country’s position during talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
The visit, described as both a friendship and working trip, highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. In a joint communiqué issued following the meeting, the Gabonese minister reaffirmed Gabon’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty over the Sahara region.
Tassyla-Ye-Doumbeneny also expressed full backing for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, describing it as the only serious, credible, and realistic solution to the regional dispute.
She further welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025. The resolution recognizes the Moroccan autonomy initiative, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, as a sustainable basis for achieving a lasting political solution to the dispute over the Sahara.
The Gabonese diplomat also pointed to her country’s decision to open a Consulate General in Laâyoune in January 2020 as concrete proof of Gabon’s commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity. The move was widely seen as part of a growing international momentum supporting Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue.
According to the joint communiqué, Gabon’s stance reflects the strengthening partnership between the two countries and aligns with a broader diplomatic dynamic led by Mohammed VI to gather international support for the autonomy initiative as the basis for resolving the dispute.
Over recent years, Morocco has gained increasing international backing for its autonomy proposal, which Rabat considers a pragmatic solution aimed at ensuring stability, development, and regional cooperation in North Africa.
