ABU DHABI — November 3, 2026 — OpenAI has signed a multi-year partnership with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and artificial intelligence company G42 to introduce advanced AI technology across the energy company’s operations.
The agreement, announced on November 2 during the ADIPEC energy conference in Abu Dhabi, is intended to connect operational and commercial decision-making across ADNOC’s business, from oilfield development and production to refining, logistics and trading.
ADNOC says the partnership will make it the first energy company to deploy OpenAI’s Frontier technology. The system will use OpenAI’s GPT models and computing infrastructure based in the United Arab Emirates.
AI to Support Oilfield Planning
One of the partnership’s initial priorities is to improve how ADNOC plans and manages its oilfields.
The companies intend to use AI to analyze decades of operational data covering thousands of wells, multiple reservoirs and hundreds of facilities. The technology is expected to help bring together information that has traditionally been examined through separate technical and financial processes.
ADNOC says the system could help prepare and optimize complex field-development plans in hours rather than months.
A second application will connect information across the company’s energy supply chain. AI systems will help assess production, processing, refining, logistics, sales and trading decisions, including forecasts of supply, demand, prices and profit margins.
The company says human experts will retain oversight of consequential decisions.
Abu Dhabi Expands Its AI Ambitions
The ADNOC agreement is part of a wider set of four agreements signed between OpenAI and Abu Dhabi-based organizations.
The Abu Dhabi government and OpenAI also launched an initiative called Machine-Readable Government. It is designed to convert selected government policies and regulations into formats that AI systems can process, helping officials with routine compliance assessments, including procedures related to permits and certificates.
According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the first pilot is already operating with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority and focuses on food imports. Government officials retain responsibility for final decisions.
Another agreement involving Mubadala, G42’s Inception42 and OpenAI will explore the use of AI in investment analysis, identifying opportunities and assessing risks.
A separate five-year agreement aims to support the adoption of advanced AI across government, businesses and education in the UAE.
A Growing Role for AI in Energy
ADNOC has already been investing in artificial intelligence and automation. The company says it has more than 200 AI applications and 70 robotics use cases deployed or under development across its operations.
The new agreement builds on those efforts by seeking to connect information and decisions across different parts of the business rather than relying only on individual AI applications.
The partnership also reflects a wider trend in which energy companies are exploring how AI can support complex industrial operations, improve planning and help manage large volumes of technical and commercial information.
However, the effectiveness of the new systems will depend on their implementation, data quality, cybersecurity protections and the ability of employees to oversee AI-generated recommendations.
What the Partnership Means
The agreement brings together three organizations with different roles: ADNOC contributes industrial operations and energy-sector expertise, G42 provides AI infrastructure and technical capabilities, and OpenAI supplies its advanced AI models and platform.
The companies have not publicly disclosed the financial value of the ADNOC agreement.
For Abu Dhabi, the partnership is part of a broader effort to expand its position in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. For OpenAI, it represents another step in bringing its technology into large-scale industrial and government applications.
The next important measure will be how the systems perform in real operating conditions and whether they deliver measurable improvements in efficiency, planning and decision-making.
