Rabat – Zambia has reaffirmed its strong backing for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara, while also welcoming the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 as a major step toward resolving the regional dispute.
The position was outlined in a joint communiqué released in Rabat following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, who is currently visiting Morocco.
During the meeting, Zambia described Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the only serious, credible, and realistic framework capable of achieving a lasting political solution to the Sahara issue. Lusaka also praised Resolution 2797, adopted by the United Nations Security Council in October 2025, for reinforcing the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty.
Haimbe emphasized his country’s support for ongoing United Nations efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the dispute. He noted that Morocco’s proposal offers a pragmatic and constructive basis for reaching a mutually acceptable agreement that can ensure long-term regional stability.
For his part, Bourita welcomed the growing partnership between Morocco and Zambia, highlighting the positive progress in bilateral relations over recent years. He pointed in particular to the opening of the Zambian Embassy in Rabat and the Consulate General in Laayoune in 2020, describing them as important milestones in strengthening cooperation between the two nations.
The latest diplomatic exchange reflects continued international support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, which several countries have increasingly endorsed as a realistic path toward ending the long-running conflict.
