A New Era for Moroccan Healthcare: King Mohammed VI Unveils Landmark University Hospital Complexes in Rabat and Agadir

Rabat, November 3, 2025 (MAP) — In a defining moment for Morocco’s healthcare system, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, accompanied by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, inaugurated on Monday the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex of Rabat, a state-of-the-art facility designed to deliver cutting-edge medical services and advanced healthcare education.

On this occasion, the Sovereign also issued His High Instructions to immediately put into service the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir, a new-generation medical hub expected to transform healthcare delivery and training in the Souss-Massa region.

A Vision of Modern, Inclusive, and Sustainable Healthcare

The inauguration of the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex in Rabat marks a major milestone in the Kingdom’s healthcare reform, reflecting His Majesty’s steadfast vision for equitable access to high-quality medical services for all citizens.

Developed by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sciences and Health, the complex merges medical innovation, academic excellence, and environmental responsibility, standing as a model for future hospital infrastructure in Morocco and beyond.

Spanning 280,000 m², the project integrates two main entities:

The Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat (190,000 m²)

The Mohammed VI University of Science and Health (90,000 m²)

Together, they form a unified platform dedicated to patient-centered care, advanced research, and comprehensive professional training.

Technology and Human Excellence at the Core

With an initial 600-bed capacity, extendable to 1,000, the new hospital features more than 30 centers of medical and surgical excellence, including robotic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiology, oncology, radiotherapy, and high-precision imaging.

Its facilities include 24 ultramodern operating rooms—19 of which are part of an integrated operating unit—and 143 intensive care beds, including 30 neonatal incubators.

The hospital boasts a suite of world-class technologies, such as:

PET-MRI (a first in Morocco and Africa) combined with PET-SCAN for precision diagnostics

3T Omega MRI and Ethos Hypersight radiotherapy system

• A robotic pharmacy and an automated laboratory platform, the first of its kind in Africa

• A digital anatomical pathology lab ensuring full traceability and diagnostic accuracy

In a groundbreaking development, the facility also includes hyperbaric and hypobaric oxygen therapy services, unique in Morocco, for both medical and physiological applications.

Training the Next Generation of Healthcare Leaders

The adjoining Mohammed VI University of Sciences and Health is envisioned as a premier academic hub designed to nurture Morocco’s future doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and medical researchers.

With a total capacity of 8,000 students, it houses:

15 lecture halls (seating 4,000 students)

72 classrooms and 217 practical workspaces

• Specialized faculties in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, and health sciences

• An international medical simulation center offering immersive, real-world training experiences

By combining academic rigor with advanced technology, the University underscores the King’s commitment to developing human capital as a strategic pillar of Morocco’s healthcare reform.

Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility

Reflecting a strong commitment to sustainability, the Rabat hospital complex is certified HQE (High Environmental Quality) at the “Exceptional” level. Its 8,800 m² of photovoltaic panels supply over 10% of its energy needs and reduce carbon emissions by 40%, setting a benchmark for green healthcare infrastructure in Africa.

Agadir CHU: A Symbol of Modernity in the Souss-Massa Region

In parallel, His Majesty’s decision to open the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir reaffirms the Kingdom’s drive to decentralize advanced healthcare services.

Built on 30 hectares with 127,000 m² of indoor space and an investment of MAD 3.1 billion, the facility offers 867 beds and multiple medical and surgical units.

Agadir CHU is also home to Africa’s first “Revo I” surgical robot, enabling minimally invasive procedures with micrometric precision and 3D vision.

Its cardiology department, featuring dual catheterization rooms and intensive care units, provides comprehensive cardiac care, including angioplasty and electrophysiology. The facility’s sterilization center and automated pharmacy system ensure safety, efficiency, and full traceability in clinical operations.

Serving an estimated three million people, the hospital will eliminate the need for many patients to travel to distant cities for complex procedures, thus reinforcing regional equity in healthcare access.

A Catalyst for National Development

Together, the Rabat and Agadir hospital complexes represent a new phase in Morocco’s medical modernization. They will not only strengthen healthcare infrastructure but also create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, fostering economic growth and social progress nationwide.

By integrating innovation, sustainability, and human development, these landmark projects embody the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, paving the way for a more resilient, inclusive, and future-ready healthcare system in Morocco.
