The Spanish National Police announced on Wednesday the successful dismantling of two international criminal organizations specializing in hashish trafficking, following a joint operation conducted in close cooperation with Morocco’s General Directorate for National Security (DGSN).
According to an official statement, the operation — coordinated with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Tangier Court of Appeal — resulted in the seizure of 20 tonnes of hashish concealed in shipments of peppers transported on refrigerated trucks.
The investigations that led to this seizure were launched after the exchange of intelligence between Spanish and Moroccan authorities. This collaboration allowed investigators to identify two truck convoys suspected of carrying large quantities of narcotics.
The first convoy was intercepted in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in the province of Cádiz, where police officers discovered 12 tonnes of hashish hidden in secret compartments behind crates of peppers. Fifteen individuals were arrested during this initial phase.
Just three days later, a second operation took place in the province of Granada, leading to the confiscation of another 8 tonnes of hashish and the arrest of five additional suspects.
In total, 20 individuals were taken into custody and charged with drug trafficking and membership in a criminal organization.
The searches also resulted in the seizure of nine vehicles, including several trucks and trailers, an automatic firearm, and over €7,000 in cash.
In its statement, the Spanish National Police commended the “valuable and efficient cooperation” of the Moroccan authorities, underscoring that this operation highlights “the excellence of security collaboration between Morocco and Spain, grounded in mutual trust, effective coordination, and a shared commitment to dismantling transnational criminal networks involved in drug trafficking.”
This latest success adds to a series of joint initiatives between the two neighboring countries, reinforcing their role as key partners in combating organized crime across the western Mediterranean region.
