Gambia Renews Strong Backing for Morocco’s Sahara Sovereignty and Autonomy Plan

23 July 2025 – Rabat

The Republic of Gambia has once again reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, hailing the Autonomy Plan as the only credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute.

This steadfast position was outlined in a joint communiqué released following a high-level meeting in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Sering Modou Njie.

In the statement, Minister Njie reiterated Gambia’s “full support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.” He also expressed Gambia’s “firm backing for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the most credible, serious, and realistic framework” for resolving the dispute.

The Gambian top diplomat commended the growing international consensus in favor of Morocco’s plan, describing it as a direct result of the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. He also recalled Gambia’s pioneering move in 2020 to become the first country to open a consulate general in Dakhla, symbolizing its concrete diplomatic support.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers further deepened the strong ties between Morocco and Gambia, with both nations pledging to continue enhancing their bilateral cooperation in various fields.
