Authorities in Idaho have identified the suspect in the fatal shooting of a firefighter as a 20-year-old man, intensifying public concern over violence targeting first responders.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been officially released by law enforcement pending formal charges, is believed to have opened fire during a confrontation earlier this week that left one firefighter dead and another person injured.
The incident occurred near a residential neighborhood where emergency crews had been responding to a call. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before seeing first responders scrambling for cover. Local police quickly secured the area and later apprehended the suspect without further incident.
The slain firefighter, whose identity has also not been disclosed pending family notification, was a member of the Idaho Fire Service and had served for several years. The department has described the firefighter as a “dedicated public servant who gave everything to protect others.”
“This is a heartbreaking day for our department and our community,” said Fire Chief Thomas Reynolds during a brief press conference. “We lost a hero today — someone who ran toward danger to help others.”
Investigators have not yet revealed a motive, but say the shooting does not appear to have been a random act. The suspect is reportedly cooperating with authorities, and formal charges are expected to be announced soon.
Governor Brad Little issued a statement condemning the violence and expressing condolences to the victim’s family. “Targeting those who protect and serve is unacceptable and will be met with the full force of justice,” he said.
The investigation remains active, and officials have urged the public to come forward with any additional information.
As the community mourns, firehouses across the state are flying flags at half-staff in tribute to the fallen firefighter — a solemn reminder of the risks first responders face every day in the line of duty.
