Middle East on Edge as Israel Launches Airstrikes Against Iran

June 12, 2025 | Jerusalem/Tehran

In a dramatic escalation that has sent shockwaves across the Middle East, Israel launched a series of pre-dawn airstrikes targeting Iranian military installations early Sunday, in what it described as a “preemptive response” to an imminent threat posed by Tehran’s expanding military presence in Syria and the Gulf region.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation in a brief statement, saying it had targeted “strategic military facilities and weapons depots used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militias.” The strikes reportedly hit locations in western Iran, near the cities of Kermanshah and Isfahan, as well as drone bases in Syria.

Iranian state media acknowledged that “several military sites” were attacked, calling the assault “an act of aggression” and warning of “serious consequences.” Unconfirmed reports suggested dozens were killed or injured in the coordinated strike, including members of the IRGC.

While details remain murky, sources in Washington said the Biden administration was not given prior warning of the strike, though U.S. officials have since urged “restraint on all sides.”

“This is not a declaration of war, but a decisive message,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an address to the Knesset. “Israel will not stand idly by while the Iranian regime surrounds us with missiles, drones, and terror proxies.”

Tensions between Israel and Iran have been steadily mounting over Iran’s increasing footprint in Syria, as well as its continued enrichment of uranium beyond the limits set by the now-defunct 2015 nuclear deal. Last month, Israeli intelligence warned of advanced drone deliveries to Hezbollah and Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Yemen.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed that the Islamic Republic would “respond with force at a time and place of our choosing,” raising fears of further escalation in an already volatile region. Protests erupted in Tehran, where chants of “Death to Israel” echoed through the streets.

The United Nations has called for an emergency Security Council meeting, and international leaders are urging diplomacy. French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “gravely concerned” and warned that the conflict could “spiral out of control.”

Analysts say this marks one of the most dangerous flashpoints in Israeli-Iranian relations in decades. “This is a defining moment,” said Dr. Leila Mansouri, a security analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “The next 48 hours will tell us whether this remains a limited operation or evolves into a broader regional conflict.”
