Brussels, 16 May 2025 – In advance of the upcoming European Union–African Union ministerial meeting scheduled for next Wednesday in Brussels, the European Union has reiterated its consistent stance on the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
Addressing questions from the press, the EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy stated firmly that “neither the EU nor any of its Member States recognize the ‘SADR.’”
The clarification comes amid speculation about the potential presence of the entity at the upcoming joint summit. The spokesperson emphasized that the meeting is co-hosted by both the EU and AU, and that any such participation would fall under the African Union’s purview, not the EU’s.
He further underlined that such presence “has no bearing” on the EU’s established position, noting that the Union’s view on the matter remains unchanged and widely known.
The statement appears aimed at preventing misinterpretation of the EU’s role in the organization of the event and distancing the bloc from any assumptions of endorsement.
