Morocco has once again reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting peace and reconciliation across Africa during a session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) held on Friday. The meeting, which marked African Day of Peace and Reconciliation, served as a platform for Morocco to emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach that integrates security, development, and stability in addressing the continent’s challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the Kingdom, Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), highlighted Morocco’s consistent engagement in fostering peace and stability throughout the continent. This commitment, he stressed, aligns with the High Directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, reflecting Morocco’s vision for a secure and prosperous Africa.
Arrouchi painted a stark picture of Africa’s current security landscape, warning that the continent faces escalating threats from political violence, terrorism, and extremism. These security issues are further compounded by persistent economic and social crises, creating a cycle of instability that hampers development efforts and undermines good governance.
Recognizing the limitations of relying solely on military interventions, Morocco advocates for a multidimensional strategy that addresses the root causes of conflict. Arrouchi emphasized the interconnectedness of peace, security, and economic development, arguing that sustainable stability can only be achieved when these elements are pursued in tandem.
Morocco’s approach is grounded in concrete actions:
• Support for African-led peace initiatives
• Mediation efforts to resolve conflicts through dialogue
• Capacity building to strengthen local institutions
• Promotion of regional cooperation to enhance collective security
Arrouchi underscored Morocco’s belief in the power of mediation and dialogue as effective tools for conflict resolution. He also highlighted the Kingdom’s dedication to strategic partnerships that bolster African peace efforts and foster socio-economic development, viewing economic empowerment as a key pillar of lasting peace.
In conclusion, Morocco’s representative reaffirmed the Kingdom’s steadfast commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Africa. By championing reconciliation, regional cooperation, and inclusive development, Morocco aims to contribute meaningfully to the continent’s long-term stability and growth.
