In a significant milestone for Niger’s energy sector, the “His Majesty King Mohammed VI” power plant, a gift from the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of Niger, was inaugurated on Thursday in Niamey. The project was completed upon the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, and represents a remarkable gesture of solidarity and cooperation between the two nations.
The inauguration ceremony, held under the High Patronage of Brigadier General Abdourrahmane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), was presided over by Niger’s Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine. A prominent Moroccan delegation was also present, including Mohamed Methqal, Director-General of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI); Tarik Hamane, Director-General of the National Office of Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE); and Morocco’s ambassador to Niger, Allal El Achab.
A Technological and Humanitarian Milestone
Situated in the Gamkaley industrial area of Niamey, the power plant is equipped with cutting-edge technology and boasts an electricity production capacity of 22.5 MVA (20 MW). This initiative is expected to significantly improve the electricity supply for Niger’s population, alleviating the country’s ongoing energy challenges and bolstering its energy sovereignty.
This donation underscores Morocco’s commitment to strengthening fraternal bilateral relations with Niger, especially during a period marked by a severe energy crisis in the Sahel region.
Bilateral Solidarity and Shared Prosperity
The “His Majesty King Mohammed VI” power plant stands as a symbol of fruitful bilateral cooperation, reflecting a partnership driven by solidarity and mutual development. It aligns with His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision of fostering sustainable human development across the African continent and furthering regional stability and prosperity.
The project also complements broader initiatives spearheaded by His Majesty to assist Sahel countries, such as the Royal Initiative to facilitate their access to the Atlantic Ocean. These efforts highlight Morocco’s strategic and humanitarian role in promoting socio-economic progress in the region.
A Collaborative Effort
Coordinated by the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), the project was realized in a remarkably short time frame, thanks to the collaborative efforts of teams from ONEE and Niger’s Electricity Company (NIGELEC).
The inauguration was attended by members of the CNSP, Niger’s transitional government, diplomatic representatives, international organizations, the Moroccan community in Niger, civil society groups, and Nigerien religious institutions.
This power plant serves as a beacon of hope for Niger and a testament to Morocco’s enduring commitment to African solidarity, development, and stability.
