The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has commemorated Morocco’s high-speed train, Al Boraq, by featuring it on a newly issued philatelic stamp series for the World Day for Sustainable Transport, celebrated annually on November 26. The announcement, made on Tuesday, underscores the global recognition of Al Boraq as a model of sustainable transportation.
Celebrating Sustainable Transport
Each year, the UN highlights the critical role of safe, affordable, accessible, and sustainable transport systems in fostering economic growth, improving social well-being, and promoting international cooperation and trade. The issuance of the stamps aligns with this year’s celebrations, marking the 60th anniversary of the world’s first high-speed train—the Japanese Shinkansen, which began operations in 1964.
The series of six stamps, illustrated by UK-based artist Tom Connell, features high-speed trains from around the world:
- Al Boraq (Morocco)
- Shinkansen (Japan)
- Amtrak Acela (United States)
- CR Fuxing (China)
- TGV INOUI (France)
- DB ICE (Germany)
A Testament to Al Boraq’s Impact
Morocco’s Al Boraq, operated by the National Railway Office (ONCF), is the first high-speed train in Africa and has become a symbol of innovation and sustainable infrastructure on the continent. Its inclusion among global giants like the Shinkansen and TGV reflects its importance in promoting eco-friendly and efficient transportation.
Encouraging Eco-Friendly Travel
The stamps not only celebrate technological achievement but also aim to raise awareness about the environmental impact of transportation. The UN emphasizes that informed choices—whether by train, bike, or other low-carbon options—can significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality, contributing to global sustainability goals.
Available Worldwide
The stamps are available for purchase online at www.unstamps.org and in UNPA shops located in New York, Vienna, and Geneva. These stamps can be used for mailing and serve as collectibles symbolizing progress in sustainable mobility.
This recognition of Al Boraq highlights Morocco’s commitment to sustainable development and its role in advancing global efforts to create accessible and eco-conscious transportation systems. By featuring Al Boraq alongside other world-class trains, the UN reiterates the importance of inclusive and sustainable transport for the betterment of society and the environment.
