Madrid – On October 18, 2024, Spain’s National Police announced the arrest of two individuals suspected of being members of the terrorist group Daesh. The arrests took place in northern Spain, in the cities of Itsasondo (Guipúzcoa) and Avilés (Asturias), as part of a joint operation with Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The suspects are accused of crimes including indoctrination, spreading terrorist propaganda, and incitement to commit violent acts, according to a statement from the Spanish police. They had been under surveillance since early 2024 due to their online activities, where they allegedly shared messages supporting Daesh and incited terrorism.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of the Central Court of Investigation, in coordination with Spain’s National Court Prosecutor’s Office. The DGST played a crucial role, with the Spanish police noting that this collaboration has led to the arrest of numerous terrorists in recent years.
The joint effort highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism, with the Spanish National Police emphasizing that the expertise and professionalism of the DGST are key to the success of these operations. The arrests also reflect Spain’s ongoing commitment to fighting terrorism both domestically and through global partnerships, a strategic priority for the national police.
