Rabat, 26 June 2024 – In a significant step towards bolstering bilateral security collaboration, Mr. Abdellatif Hammouchi, Director General of National Security (DGSN) and Territorial Surveillance (DGST) of Morocco, concluded a working visit to Germany from June 24-26, 2024. The visit, held at the invitation of German officials, focused on enhancing cooperation in various security domains.
According to a communiqué from the DGSN-DGST hub, the visit aimed to strengthen the existing security partnership between Morocco and Germany, particularly in preparation for major upcoming sporting events that Morocco will host.
During his stay, Mr. Hammouchi engaged in productive discussions with key German security figures, including Dieter Romann, President of the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei), and Holger Münch, Head of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). These meetings concentrated on several critical areas, such as counter-terrorism, organized cross-border crime, and the security of major sporting events.
The Moroccan delegation also visited the German Joint Counter-Terrorism Centre (GTAZ) in Berlin, where they were briefed on the center’s operational mechanisms for coordinating between various German security agencies. This visit underscored the potential for enhanced collaboration with Moroccan security services to mitigate cross-border terrorist threats.
Furthermore, the visit explored the potential for cooperation in sports security. Mr. Hammouchi was given an overview of the security measures and standards implemented by Berlin police for the UEFA Cup, which Germany is currently hosting. The Moroccan delegation, along with BKA officials, visited Berlin’s Olympic Stadium and the police operations management center to study their safety protocols during the Euro 2024 games.
This visit marks a pivotal moment in Morocco’s preparation for hosting international sporting and security events, including the 93rd Interpol General Assembly in Marrakech, the 2025 African Cup of Nations, and the 2030 World Cup, which will be organized jointly with Spain and Portugal.
The Moroccan and German discussions also highlighted the broader regional and international security challenges both countries face. The official visit demonstrated the importance of the bilateral security relationship between Morocco and Germany and reflected the commitment of DGSN and DGST to international efforts to address security risks and threats.
The successful conclusion of Mr. Hammouchi’s visit reaffirms the shared commitment to enhancing security cooperation and ensuring the safety of both nations against emerging threats, thus setting a strong foundation for future collaborative efforts in maintaining regional and global security.
