Rabat – The Kingdom of Morocco has achieved a significant diplomatic victory with the re-election of Mr. Mahjoub El Haiba to the UN Human Rights Committee. This election, which took place during the 40th meeting of States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in New York, highlights Morocco’s growing influence and commitment to human rights.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Morocco’s candidacy received overwhelming support, garnering 120 votes in favor. Competing against fifteen other candidates for one of the nine available positions on the Committee for the 2025-2028 term, Morocco’s success is a testament to its credibility and the confidence it enjoys within the international community.
This re-election underscores the Kingdom’s dedication to the promotion and effectiveness of human rights, guided by the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Morocco’s commitment is evident both in the democratic reforms implemented domestically and in its proactive initiatives on the multilateral stage.
The electoral success is the result of a robust promotional campaign led by Morocco’s diplomatic apparatus. Mr. El Haiba, a respected university professor, brings a wealth of experience to the Committee. He has previously served as Secretary General of the Consultative Council for Human Rights (now the National Council for Human Rights) and as the First Interministerial Delegate for Human Rights.
Since his initial election to the Human Rights Committee, Mr. El Haiba has been instrumental in enhancing the working methods of this crucial body. The Committee, comprised of eighteen experts elected by States Parties with an equitable geographical distribution, plays a pivotal role in monitoring the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, adopted in 1966.
The Committee’s mandate includes examining State reports on Covenant implementation, preparing general comments on the obligations arising from it, and addressing communications concerning violations of the Covenant. Mr. El Haiba’s re-election ensures that Morocco will continue to contribute significantly to these vital functions, reinforcing its position as a responsible and committed actor on the international human rights stage.
