Rabat – The United States has once again reaffirmed its clear recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, reinforcing a position that continues to shape diplomatic efforts around the long-standing regional dispute.
Speaking in Rabat, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed Washington’s stance during a press conference following his meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
“The United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara,” Landau stated, underlining his country’s continued commitment to supporting a resolution to the conflict.
He stressed the urgency of finding a political settlement, pointing to the latest United Nations Security Council resolution 2797 as a framework for renewed diplomatic efforts. According to Landau, the dispute has lasted far too long and requires a realistic and timely solution.
During the discussions, the American official reiterated Washington’s backing of Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as a serious, credible, and realistic proposal capable of delivering a just and lasting outcome. He emphasized that the plan remains the most viable path toward resolving the territorial issue.
Beyond political support, Landau also highlighted economic opportunities in the region. He affirmed that the United States encourages American companies to invest and expand their business activities in the Sahara, signaling growing confidence in the region’s development potential.
The renewed U.S. position reflects a broader push to advance stability and economic growth, while accelerating efforts to bring closure to one of North Africa’s most enduring disputes.
