Ljubljana, April 18, 2025 — In a strong show of support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, Slovenia has reaffirmed its appreciation for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a viable and constructive basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
During a joint press conference held in Ljubljana on Friday, Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, underscored her country’s endorsement of the 2007 Moroccan Autonomy Plan. Standing alongside Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Fajon highlighted that the plan offers “a good basis for a definitive solution” and acknowledged Morocco’s “serious and credible efforts” toward ending the decades-long conflict.
Fajon’s remarks reflect the continuity of Slovenia’s diplomatic stance, as echoed in the Joint Declaration adopted during her official visit to Rabat on June 11, 2024. That declaration laid the foundation for a renewed phase in Moroccan-Slovenian relations and formalized Slovenia’s position in support of a peaceful, UN-led resolution to the Sahara dispute.
Both ministers reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to the exclusivity of the United Nations in the political process and voiced full support for Security Council Resolution 2756 (2024), which calls on all parties to work toward a realistic, pragmatic, and sustainable solution grounded in compromise.
In her statement, Fajon reiterated Slovenia’s longstanding backing of the UN-led process and emphasized the importance of engaging all stakeholders in meaningful dialogue to achieve a mutually acceptable outcome.
Morocco and Slovenia also expressed their continued support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to advance the political process, and reaffirmed their backing for MINURSO, the UN peacekeeping mission tasked with monitoring the ceasefire and supporting negotiations.
Friday’s meeting in Ljubljana marks another step forward in strengthening the political and diplomatic partnership between Morocco and Slovenia — one that is increasingly aligned on key regional and international issues, particularly in support of peace, stability, and multilateralism.
