On October 22, 2024, the Republic of Ecuador announced its decision to suspend recognition of the so-called Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD), initially acknowledged in 1983 with the establishment of an embassy in 2009.
Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, informed her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, of this decision during a phone call. She also confirmed that a notification letter had been sent to the separatists’ representation in Quito.
This move aligns with the ongoing efforts driven by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to affirm Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and promote the Autonomy Plan as the only framework for resolving the regional dispute. Ecuador’s decision marks a new chapter in the diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Latin American nation.
