Tokyo – Japan has welcomed the “serious and credible Moroccan efforts” within the framework of the autonomy initiative to resolve the Moroccan Sahara issue, according to an official statement released on Friday.
This supportive stance was articulated by Japan’s Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, during discussions held in Tokyo with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita. The Japanese Foreign Ministry noted that Kamikawa underscored Japan’s “consistent” position regarding the Moroccan autonomy initiative, which was originally submitted to the UN Secretary-General on April 11, 2007.
Minister Kamikawa highlighted the importance of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, emphasizing the “serious and credible efforts” made by Morocco to advance the process towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the Moroccan Sahara issue. This initiative proposes a form of self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty, aiming to address the aspirations of the local population while maintaining the territorial integrity of Morocco.
During the meeting, Minister Bourita expressed appreciation for Japan’s supportive position on the Moroccan Sahara. He reiterated Morocco’s commitment to finding a lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the conflict, aligning with international legality and contributing to regional stability and development.
The exchange between the two ministers signifies a reinforcement of diplomatic ties between Japan and Morocco, highlighting Japan’s recognition of the efforts made by Morocco in its quest for a viable solution to the longstanding dispute. The affirmation of support by Japan could play a crucial role in the ongoing international dialogue and efforts to bring a resolution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
As Morocco continues its diplomatic endeavors, the backing of influential nations like Japan bolsters its position on the global stage, reaffirming the legitimacy and viability of its proposed autonomy initiative. This initiative remains a cornerstone of Morocco’s strategy to resolve the conflict, which has persisted for decades, impeding broader regional cooperation and development.
The continued engagement and positive reception from the international community, as demonstrated by Japan’s recent statements, are critical for the momentum towards achieving a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the Moroccan Sahara conflict.
