SANAA / GENEVA — November 1, 2026 — The United Nations has called for an immediate and independent investigation following the death of a Yemeni staff member of the UN Human Rights Office while in the custody of Houthi authorities in Yemen.
Mohammad el-Shami had been detained since June 6, 2024. According to information provided by his family to the UN, he died more than a month ago, but his relatives were only recently informed.
The circumstances and cause of his death remain unclear.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the death and called on the Houthi de facto authorities to provide answers. He also demanded an impartial, transparent and thorough investigation.
UN Calls for Transparency and Accountability
In a statement issued on October 31, the UN Secretary-General said the organization was urgently seeking information about the circumstances surrounding el-Shami’s death.
The UN has said that repeated requests for information about his well-being and proof of life had gone unanswered during his detention.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk also demanded full transparency, including the disclosure of relevant medical and detention records and an independent examination of the circumstances of the death.
The UN says the family deserves to know what happened to their relative.
Concern for Other Detained UN Personnel
The death has intensified concerns about the safety of other United Nations employees and humanitarian workers detained in Yemen.
The Secretary-General said that 70 serving UN personnel, five former UN staff members and workers from humanitarian and civil society organizations remained detained.
Türk also expressed concern for seven other employees of his office who remain in custody and renewed calls for their immediate and unconditional release.
The UN has warned that the continued detention of its personnel is undermining its ability to carry out humanitarian and human rights operations in Yemen.
A Wider Humanitarian Concern
Yemen has endured years of conflict, political fragmentation and a severe humanitarian crisis. The detention of aid workers and international personnel has added further difficulties for organizations seeking to assist vulnerable communities.
The Houthis have previously accused some detained individuals of involvement in espionage activities. These allegations have not been independently established in the information reviewed for this report.
The circumstances surrounding el-Shami’s death have not yet been publicly clarified, and the UN is calling for an investigation to establish what happened and whether anyone should be held accountable.
What Happens Next?
The United Nations is seeking answers from the Houthi authorities and continues to demand the release of those still detained.
An independent investigation could help establish the circumstances of el-Shami’s death and provide his family with answers.
