Trump condemns ‘lunatic’ in Charlotte stabbing: ‘If we don’t handle evil, we don’t have a country’

Charlotte, N.C. — September 8, 2025 — Former President Donald Trump on Monday denounced a brutal stabbing attack in Charlotte, calling the assailant a “lunatic” and urging tougher action against violent crime.

The remarks came hours after local authorities confirmed that multiple people were injured in a stabbing incident at a downtown transit hub. Police have not yet released the suspect’s name or motive but said the attacker was quickly taken into custody after bystanders and security personnel intervened.

Speaking at a campaign rally in neighboring South Carolina, Trump opened his address with strong words about the attack. “What happened in Charlotte today is a disgrace,” he told the crowd. “A lunatic goes out and stabs innocent people, and we’re supposed to accept this? If we don’t handle evil, we don’t have a country.”

Trump’s comments drew loud applause from supporters and underscored his ongoing campaign theme of restoring “law and order.” He promised that, if reelected, his administration would push for harsher penalties for violent offenders and expand funding for law enforcement.

Local officials said at least four victims were hospitalized, two of them in serious condition. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families tonight,” said Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles. “We will ensure a full investigation and hold the perpetrator accountable.”

The attack has reignited debates over public safety in urban areas, with residents expressing concern over growing violence in public spaces. Some community leaders have urged caution against politicizing the tragedy, emphasizing the need for mental health support and preventive measures in addition to policing.

For Trump, however, the incident offered a platform to reinforce his message of strength against crime. “We cannot allow this madness to continue,” he said. “We’re going to stop it, and we’re going to stop it fast.”

The Charlotte Police Department said updates on the suspect and victims will be released in the coming days as investigations continue.
