Rabat, April 2025 — In a powerful reaffirmation of Washington’s stance, Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump for African Affairs, declared that the United States’ position on the Moroccan Sahara remains “clear and unequivocal.”
In an exclusive interview with Medi1 TV and Radio, Boulos reiterated the American government’s full recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara territories — a position first enshrined in the historic 2020 Proclamation issued by President Trump.
“The U.S. position has been expressed clearly and repeatedly — there is no ambiguity,” Boulos stated. “It is the same position President Trump communicated directly to His Majesty King Mohammed VI. America fully supports Morocco’s sovereignty and the autonomy plan as the path forward.”
This firm message comes at a time when misinformation and speculation around the U.S. position have been circulating, prompting Boulos to emphasize that any contradictory claims are unfounded.
He cited recent comments by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who just last week reaffirmed America’s alignment with Morocco, calling the 2007 Moroccan autonomy initiative “serious, credible, and realistic.” Rubio’s statement was a continuation of the same line Washington has taken for years, reinforcing that the autonomy plan is the most practical and just framework to resolve the regional dispute.
Boulos also warned against taking any political commentary out of context or manipulating public statements.
“This issue is too important to be distorted,” he added. “The facts are clear: the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty, and we continue to support a final, fair solution grounded in realism and compromise.”
The Moroccan autonomy plan, proposed in 2007, has garnered growing international support — not only from the United States but also from numerous European and African nations. This latest reiteration by Boulos underscores Washington’s lasting strategic partnership with Morocco, and its role as a key stabilizing force in North Africa and the Sahel.
The interview marks another milestone in the strong diplomatic relationship between Rabat and Washington, as both countries continue to collaborate on issues of security, economic development, and regional stability.
“America’s commitment to Morocco is not temporary,” Boulos concluded. “It is built on shared values, trust, and a mutual vision for peace and prosperity in the region.”
As Morocco continues to gain traction and support internationally, particularly through its dynamic diplomacy, voices like Massad Boulos’s serve as crucial reminders that the foundation of U.S.-Moroccan relations — including support for the Sahara — is solid, strategic, and unwavering.
