Following a high-level meeting in Madrid on Thursday with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Spain’s top diplomat, José Manuel Albares Bueno, underscored that the autonomy proposal—first introduced by Morocco in 2007—remains “the most serious, realistic and credible basis” for a lasting resolution.
Albares emphasized Spain’s recognition of the Sahara’s strategic and symbolic importance to Morocco and praised Rabat’s continued efforts within the UN framework to broker a mutually acceptable solution. “Spain stands with the Kingdom of Morocco in supporting a compromise-based, politically viable outcome,” he said.
This reaffirmation comes amid growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, spurred by the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and reflected in key developments such as the UN Security Council’s recent Resolution 2756, which calls for continued momentum toward a diplomatic settlement.
Spain’s stance not only strengthens its bilateral ties with Morocco but also signals a firm alignment with the evolving global consensus. By backing the autonomy plan, Madrid sends a clear message of its commitment to regional stability and constructive diplomacy.
As the political process moves forward, Spain’s endorsement serves as both a boost to Morocco’s position and a call to the international community to rally behind a solution that prioritizes peace, pragmatism, and partnership.
