Moldova-Endorses-Morocco's-Autonomy-Plan-as Most-Credible-Basis
Chișinău, Moldova | April 15, 2025 — In a significant diplomatic boost for Morocco’s territorial integrity, the Republic of Moldova declared its support on Tuesday for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as “the most serious and credible basis” for resolving the decades-long dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The announcement came as part of a Joint Declaration signed in Chișinău following official talks between Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, who is on a working visit to the Eastern European country.
Moldova Reaffirms Support for UN-Led Process
Moldova’s top diplomat reiterated his country’s full backing for Morocco’s sincere efforts to end the regional dispute through a peaceful and pragmatic solution. Emphasizing the importance of international legitimacy, both ministers agreed that the political process should remain under the exclusive auspices of the United Nations.
The two countries jointly reaffirmed their support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756 (2024), which calls for a realistic, pragmatic, and enduring political solution based on compromise. The resolution also recognizes the role of involved parties in working toward a mutually acceptable agreement.
Moldova also endorsed the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy and reiterated support for MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara), underscoring the importance of international engagement to maintain stability and facilitate progress on the ground.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The visit marks a new chapter in Morocco-Moldova relations, with both countries expressing a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation across political, economic, and diplomatic fronts. Minister Bourita’s visit, the first of its kind, highlights Rabat’s broader diplomatic outreach in Eastern Europe and Moldova’s growing engagement with key North African partners.
The Moldovan endorsement comes amid a wave of international momentum for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which was first proposed in 2007 and has since been widely recognized as a realistic and workable solution within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.
Morocco’s Growing International Support
Moldova now joins a growing list of countries across Europe, Africa, and Latin America that have publicly backed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan. These endorsements reflect increasing global consensus around a political resolution that ensures stability and development in the region, in line with international law and UN efforts.
The latest support from Chișinău further validates Morocco’s diplomatic strategy, guided by the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and reinforces the Kingdom’s standing as a credible partner in the international arena.
As diplomatic momentum continues to build, Morocco’s autonomy plan stands out as the cornerstone of a realistic path forward—one that prioritizes peace, compromise, and regional cooperation.
