Rabat, November 6, 2024 – On the 49th anniversary of Morocco’s historic Green March, His Majesty King Mohammed VI delivered a heartfelt speech to the nation, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to its territorial integrity and highlighting new initiatives to support Moroccans residing abroad. The Green March, a peaceful mobilization that affirmed Morocco’s claim to the Sahara, remains a cornerstone of the country’s national identity and sovereignty.
In his speech, HM the King celebrated the ongoing loyalty of Moroccans in the Sahara, their connection to their homeland, and their steadfast support for Morocco’s national values. He praised the region’s progress and growing international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, citing the United Nations’ growing support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative.
King Mohammed VI addressed the geopolitical complexities surrounding the Sahara, dismissing outdated perspectives on the issue and reiterating Morocco’s rejection of any exploitation of the Sahara conflict for ulterior motives. The Sovereign also called on the United Nations to recognize Morocco’s legitimate stance and to promote practical solutions for regional cooperation that would benefit North African countries as a whole.
Emphasizing the vital role of Moroccan expatriates, HM the King announced a restructuring of institutions supporting Moroccans abroad to improve administrative services and support investment. The King called for the rapid establishment of two key entities: the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad, a consultative platform representing expatriates, and the Mohammadia Foundation for Moroccans Residing Abroad, an executive body to implement policies, support cultural programs, and streamline administrative processes for Moroccans overseas.
This restructuring aims to strengthen ties between Moroccan expatriates and their homeland, address their evolving needs, and boost their contributions to national development. The King expressed disappointment that investment from the Moroccan diaspora accounts for only 10% of private investment, calling for new avenues to encourage expatriate investment.
HM the King concluded his speech by paying tribute to the Green March generation and its legacy, calling on all Moroccans to remain united and vigilant in defending Morocco’s territorial integrity. He reminded citizens of the country’s continued journey toward development, emphasizing that progress should reach all regions, from the Rif to the Sahara.
With the anniversary of the Green March as a powerful backdrop, King Mohammed VI’s address resonated as a call to honor the past, embrace unity, and pursue a brighter, more inclusive future for all Moroccans.
