Rabat, 11/10/2024 – HM King Mohammed VI, accompanied by HRH Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan and HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, delivered a significant speech on Friday during the opening of the first session of the fourth legislative year of the 11th Legislature. The speech, which was centered around the issue of Morocco’s territorial integrity, highlighted the nation’s unwavering stance on the Moroccan Sahara and the importance of proactive diplomacy in securing international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty.
In his address, King Mohammed VI reiterated Morocco’s steadfast commitment to resolving the Sahara issue within the framework of sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized the shift from a reactive stance to a more decisive, proactive approach in defending the nation’s historical and legitimate rights over the Sahara region.
“Since I ascended the throne, I have called for a shift from merely managing the situation to changing it, both domestically and internationally,” said the King. “The truth has prevailed, by the Grace of the Almighty, and Morocco’s just cause has gained global recognition.”
A major highlight of the speech was the recognition by France of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. HM King Mohammed VI extended his personal gratitude to France and President Emmanuel Macron for their unequivocal support. France’s recognition, he noted, bolsters Morocco’s diplomatic efforts, as it comes from a significant global player and permanent member of the UN Security Council.
King Mohammed VI further acknowledged the support of the United States and numerous Arab, African, and European nations that have shown solidarity with Morocco’s stance on the Sahara. This international backing includes countries that have opened consulates in Laayoune and Dakhla, recognizing the region as integral to Morocco.
“France’s position is part of a broader positive momentum that confirms Morocco’s sovereignty over its territory. This support, along with that of the United States and other nations, solidifies our position on the world stage,” the King stated.
The speech also highlighted the strategic importance of Morocco’s southern provinces, positioning them as a vital hub for economic, social, and cultural development. HM King Mohammed VI noted that the region plays a crucial role in broader continental initiatives, including the Morocco-Nigeria Gas Pipeline and the African Atlantic countries initiative, further integrating Morocco with the rest of Africa.
The King called on Parliament and all national institutions to continue their efforts to consolidate Morocco’s position and publicize the nation’s just cause. He encouraged greater coordination between governmental, party, and civic organizations to enhance diplomatic efforts, particularly in engaging with countries that have yet to align with Morocco’s stance.
“Concerted efforts are required to explain the legitimacy of Morocco’s position using legal, political, historical, and spiritual evidence. We must continue to engage with those countries whose stances still go against the logic of law and history,” King Mohammed VI urged.
In closing, the King praised the Moroccan people, especially those from the Sahara region, for their unwavering loyalty and dedication to the nation’s territorial integrity. He commended the diplomatic service and national institutions for their efforts in defending Morocco’s sovereignty on the international stage.
“Morocco will never waver in its position. Our country will remain open to its regional environment, contributing to joint development, security, and stability,” the King concluded, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to peace and prosperity in the Maghreb and beyond.
With this speech, King Mohammed VI set the tone for the legislative year, reinforcing the importance of national unity and proactive diplomacy in ensuring Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
