Finland Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as Path Toward Resolving Sahara Dispute

Rabat, 01 March 2026 — Finland has expressed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most viable framework for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue, describing genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a “most feasible solution.”

This position was outlined in a Joint Communiqué issued in Rabat following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Finland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonen, who is currently on an official visit to the Kingdom.

In the communiqué, Finland reaffirmed its support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco, considering it a serious and credible contribution to the political process conducted under the auspices of the United Nations. Helsinki emphasized that the initiative provides a solid basis for achieving a definitive and mutually acceptable political solution.

The two ministers also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, highlighting its importance in advancing diplomatic efforts. They reiterated their backing for the initiatives led by the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy aimed at securing a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable settlement to the dispute.

The discussions in Rabat reflect continued international engagement on the Moroccan Sahara issue and underscore growing support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a pragmatic framework within the UN-led process.
