Senegal Reaffirms Backing for Morocco’s Sovereignty and Autonomy Initiative in the Sahara

Rabat — The Republic of Senegal has once again reaffirmed its firm and unwavering support for the Kingdom of Morocco’s territorial integrity and full sovereignty over its entire national territory, including the Moroccan Sahara.

This position was clearly expressed in the Joint Communiqué issued on Monday in Rabat following the meeting of the Morocco–Senegal High Joint Partnership Commission, co-chaired by the Head of Government, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, and the Prime Minister of Senegal, Mr. Ousmane Sonko.

During the session, the Senegalese side reiterated its full and explicit support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco under its sovereignty, considering it the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the regional dispute. Senegal emphasized that this initiative remains firmly anchored within the exclusive framework of the United Nations, in line with international legality and consensus.

Senegal also welcomed the historic adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which endorses the Moroccan autonomy initiative within the framework of national sovereignty. The resolution, Senegal noted, confirms the plan as the sole serious, credible, and lasting basis for achieving a political solution to the Sahara issue.

The renewed Senegalese position reflects the strength of the strategic partnership and longstanding brotherly relations between Rabat and Dakar, as well as their shared commitment to stability, cooperation, and sustainable development across the African continent.

Through this clear and consistent support, Senegal once again aligns itself with the growing international consensus recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and backing the autonomy initiative as a pragmatic and forward-looking solution to the regional dispute.
