Moroccan Sahara: Poland Considers Autonomy Plan the ‘Serious, Realistic, Pragmatic Basis for Lasting Solution’
21 October 2025 – Rabat
In a significant diplomatic development, Poland has officially voiced its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Sahara, calling it “the serious, realistic and pragmatic basis for a lasting solution” to the regional dispute. This endorsement was shared through a Joint Communiqué following a telephone discussion between Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
Proposed by Morocco in 2007, the Autonomy Plan aims to resolve the longstanding conflict over the Sahara region by offering self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty. Poland’s declaration aligns it with a growing number of nations recognizing the plan as a viable path to peace and stability.
This latest support adds to the momentum Morocco has built internationally: 23 of the 27 European Union member states and over 120 countries globally now back a political resolution based on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
Poland’s endorsement marks a noteworthy shift in European engagement with the Sahara issue, reinforcing a broader trend among EU countries toward recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty and efforts for regional peace. The move also reflects Poland’s commitment to supporting constructive and sustainable solutions in North Africa and beyond.
As international consensus around Morocco’s plan continues to build, the path forward may be narrowing toward a solution grounded in autonomy—one that balances regional aspirations with national unity and long-term stability.
