Tunis — Organizers of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla said Friday that one of their vessels was struck by a drone while docked at a Tunisian port, raising fears of sabotage against the humanitarian mission.
The group, which set sail earlier this month carrying medical supplies, food, and other essentials intended for Palestinians in Gaza, said the attack caused damage to the boat but no casualties among the crew or volunteers.
“The evidence points to a deliberate strike carried out by a drone,” flotilla organizers stated. “This was an attack not only on our ship but also on the principle of humanitarian solidarity.”
Tunisian authorities confirmed that an explosion occurred at the port overnight and said investigators were working to determine the source. No party has claimed responsibility, though officials did not rule out the possibility of foreign involvement.
The flotilla, made up of international volunteers and supported by humanitarian organizations, had planned to continue its journey across the Mediterranean in the coming days. Organizers said they are assessing whether repairs can be completed quickly or if alternative arrangements must be made to deliver the aid.
The incident has drawn condemnation from pro-Palestinian groups and human rights advocates, who described the strike as an attempt to obstruct the delivery of life-saving supplies to Gaza, where shortages of medicine, fuel, and food remain dire.
Tunisian media reported heightened security measures at the port following the blast. Officials pledged to “protect humanitarian initiatives” operating from Tunisian territory.
International observers say the incident highlights the increasingly fraught environment for civilian-led aid missions to Gaza, which have often faced political pressure, blockades, and security risks.
Despite the setback, flotilla representatives vowed to continue their mission. “We will not be intimidated,” a spokesperson said. “The people of Gaza are waiting, and we will reach them.”
