Minnesota is reeling after a deadly string of shootings targeting state lawmakers led to what authorities are calling the largest manhunt in the state’s history. Vance Luther Boelter, 57, has been formally charged with multiple counts of second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the politically motivated attacks.
The violence began on the morning of June 14, when former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their Maple Grove home. Hours later, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were critically injured in a similar ambush at their residence in Brooklyn Park. Both incidents stunned the public and left officials scrambling for answers.
Authorities launched a massive search for the suspect, spanning multiple counties, with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies working in coordination. Boelter, described by officials as heavily armed and wearing tactical-style gear, evaded capture for nearly two days. He was ultimately located in a wooded area near his home in northern Minnesota and surrendered without incident.
Investigators revealed that Boelter had in his possession a manifesto and a hit list of nearly 70 names, including high-profile Minnesota politicians and national figures. Sources say the writings expressed extremist anti-government views and grievances tied to reproductive rights and immigration policies.
“The scale and planning involved suggest this was an act of domestic terrorism,” said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz at a press briefing. “This was a targeted political attack on our democracy and those who serve it.”
Boelter now faces two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, with additional federal charges pending, including weapons violations and potential terrorism-related counts. Prosecutors have not ruled out pursuing the death penalty under federal statutes.
Senator Hoffman and his wife remain hospitalized, with doctors reporting they are in stable condition after undergoing surgery. Their family has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the public.
The shootings have sparked national debate about political violence, security for public officials, and the rise of domestic extremism. Lawmakers from both parties have condemned the attacks, calling for increased protections for elected officials and more robust efforts to combat radicalization.
Boelter’s first court appearance is scheduled for later this week.
The investigation is ongoing.
