Tragedy in the Skies: Over 200 Dead as Air India Plane Crashes After Take-Off in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, India — June 8, 2025

A devastating air disaster has struck India, as an Air India passenger jet carrying over 230 people crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad early Monday morning. Authorities have confirmed that more than 200 passengers and crew have lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in the country’s recent history.

The aircraft, a Boeing 777 bound for London Heathrow, took off at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time before reportedly losing altitude just minutes into the flight. Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene as the plane veered unnaturally low over residential areas before crashing into an open field on the outskirts of the city, engulfing into flames on impact.

“I heard a loud roar, looked up, and saw the plane wobbling unnaturally,” said local resident Shailesh Mehta, who lives near the crash site. “Within seconds, it plunged down and exploded. The entire sky turned orange.”

Emergency response teams, firefighters, and military personnel rushed to the scene. Despite valiant rescue efforts, the impact and subsequent inferno left little chance of survival for those on board. Hospital officials have confirmed only a handful of survivors, all in critical condition.

Questions Arise Amid National Mourning

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow in a televised address, stating, “This is a dark day for India. Our thoughts are with the families of all those we have lost. A thorough investigation has already been ordered, and no effort will be spared to determine the cause of this tragedy.”

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a formal investigation, with early reports suggesting a possible technical malfunction. Air traffic control transcripts indicate the pilot issued a distress call moments after take-off, reporting erratic engine behavior and requesting an emergency return. However, the call was cut short just seconds later.

International Response and Airline Statement

Air India, still reeling from the shock, released a somber statement offering condolences and pledging full cooperation with authorities. “We are heartbroken. Our hearts go out to the families of the passengers and crew members who were on board Flight AI271. We are doing everything we can to support the investigation and assist affected families,” said Air India CEO Rajesh Malhotra.

The airline has set up emergency hotlines and dispatched grief counselors to both Ahmedabad and London to assist the families of the victims.

Condolences have poured in from around the world, with leaders from the UK, United States, France, and the United Nations offering their sympathies and support. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is also expected to join the investigation.

A Nation in Shock

In Ahmedabad, schools were closed, flags flew at half-mast, and crowds gathered at local temples and mosques for collective prayers. Across the country, citizens lit candles and observed moments of silence in honor of the victims.

The crash comes at a time when India’s aviation sector had been experiencing renewed growth after years of pandemic-related disruptions. But the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of human life in the face of mechanical failure and the high cost of oversight in safety systems.

As black boxes are recovered and experts sift through the wreckage, one question hangs heavy in the smoke-filled sky: could this tragedy have been prevented?
