Climate Activist Expelled After Naval Interception of Aid Vessel Near Gaza Waters

Tel Aviv, June 8, 2025 — Prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg was deported from Israel on Sunday after being detained aboard a humanitarian vessel attempting to reach the Gaza coast. The ship, which carried international peace activists and medical supplies, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces before it could enter the restricted maritime zone off the Gaza Strip.

The vessel, part of a civilian-led flotilla aiming to deliver aid to Gaza amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis, had departed from Cyprus earlier in the week. According to organizers, the mission was intended to draw attention to the humanitarian needs in Gaza and challenge the blockade that has limited the flow of goods into the region.

Thunberg, 22, who joined the mission in what she called a “gesture of solidarity with people suffering under siege,” was briefly detained along with other passengers and crew members after the vessel was boarded by the Israeli navy. The group was escorted to the port of Ashdod, where authorities conducted identification and security screenings.

In a brief statement, Israel’s Ministry of Interior confirmed Thunberg was deported “in accordance with national security protocol” after her involvement in what officials described as a “deliberate provocation.” She was put on a return flight to Sweden late Sunday evening.

Israel maintains that the naval blockade on Gaza is a necessary measure to prevent the smuggling of weapons to Hamas. The government has repeatedly warned that unauthorized vessels approaching Gaza will be stopped, citing both legal and security concerns.

The incident has sparked widespread international reaction, with human rights organizations and activists condemning the interception of the humanitarian mission and the expulsion of Thunberg.

Speaking to reporters after landing in Stockholm, Thunberg said, “We were there to deliver hope and essential supplies, not to escalate conflict. The world must not look away from the suffering in Gaza.”

The episode adds a new dimension to Thunberg’s global activism, which has previously focused on climate justice. Her participation in the flotilla signals an expansion of her advocacy into broader human rights and humanitarian issues.

This latest maritime interception has also renewed debate over the effectiveness and legality of the Gaza blockade, with calls from multiple international bodies urging Israel to allow increased humanitarian access to the territory.

Despite the setback, organizers of the flotilla say they remain undeterred and are planning additional missions to bring attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
