Virginia Beach Police have launched an aggressive new initiative aimed at curbing illegal firearm transactions known as “straw purchases” — a process where someone buys a gun on behalf of another person who may not be legally allowed to own one.
According to officials, the crackdown comes in response to a noticeable uptick in firearms linked to local crimes that were originally purchased by individuals with no criminal history. Investigators say these guns often end up in the hands of felons, minors, or others prohibited from owning weapons.
The department is working closely with federal partners, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), to identify and prosecute those who participate in these illegal purchases. Under both state and federal law, knowingly making a straw purchase is a serious offense that can result in prison time and hefty fines.
“People may think they’re doing someone a favor by buying a gun for them, but they’re actually committing a crime that puts the entire community at risk,” said a Virginia Beach Police spokesperson.
In addition to enhanced enforcement, police are also increasing public awareness through educational outreach, warning residents that ignorance of the law is not a defense.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce gun violence and ensure firearms are only in the hands of those legally permitted to own them.
