Rabat – May 22, 2025 — In a move that further boosts Morocco’s international diplomatic standing, Slovakia has formally expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a viable foundation for resolving the longstanding Sahara dispute. The declaration was made in a joint statement following a meeting in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár.
Slovakia’s endorsement of the Moroccan initiative — originally presented to the United Nations in 2007 — marks another key milestone in the global momentum rallying behind Morocco’s sovereignty claims over its southern provinces. According to the joint communiqué, Slovakia recognizes the autonomy proposal as “a basis for a definitive solution under the auspices of the United Nations.”
The statement also emphasizes Slovakia’s appreciation for Morocco’s “serious and credible” efforts to advance a political solution. It reaffirms support for “a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution, based on compromise,” in alignment with the United Nations Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2756 adopted on October 31, 2024.
This diplomatic alignment reflects a broader shift among European and international partners recognizing Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a pragmatic approach to ending the decades-long conflict over the Sahara region. Over the past several years, numerous countries have echoed similar positions, citing Morocco’s plan as a realistic pathway toward peace and regional stability.
The growing international recognition not only strengthens Morocco’s geopolitical posture but also underscores King Mohammed VI’s sustained diplomatic outreach and commitment to fostering strategic partnerships across Europe and beyond.
Slovakia’s public backing is expected to encourage further European engagement with Morocco on political, economic, and security issues—anchoring Rabat as a central player in regional diplomacy.
