Jerusalem, May 1, 2025 — A wave of fast-moving wildfires erupted in the hills surrounding Jerusalem this week, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare a national emergency as firefighters scramble to contain the growing threat.
The fires, fueled by dry conditions, strong winds, and an early-season heatwave, have engulfed forests and communities west of Jerusalem. Thick plumes of smoke blanketed parts of the city, reducing visibility and raising health concerns. Thousands of residents in nearby areas have been forced to evacuate their homes as flames advanced toward populated regions.
“This is a dangerous and developing situation,” Netanyahu said in a televised address. “We are declaring a national emergency to bring all available resources—civil, military, and international—into the fight against these fires.”
Fire and rescue services have been stretched thin as dozens of blazes ignited across central Israel. Emergency crews have been working around the clock, assisted by planes dropping water and flame retardant. Despite their efforts, high winds have caused the fires to jump containment lines, threatening new areas.
Israel’s Home Front Command has been activated, and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are assisting with evacuations and logistical support. Hospitals near Jerusalem have prepared for an influx of patients suffering from smoke inhalation and burn injuries.
Officials have not confirmed the cause of the fires, though authorities are investigating whether human activity or arson may be involved. Environmental groups warn that climate change is likely contributing to increasingly frequent and severe wildfire events across the region.
International offers of assistance have begun to arrive, with Greece and Cyprus pledging firefighting aircraft and personnel. Netanyahu has stated that Israel is open to accepting more aid if conditions worsen.
“This is a time for national unity and resolve,” Netanyahu added. “We will do everything in our power to protect our citizens and our land.”
As the fires continue to spread, residents are being urged to follow evacuation orders and stay tuned to official updates. Authorities have warned that weather conditions may not improve for several days, raising fears that the crisis could escalate further.
