In a momentous achievement for Moroccan sport and women’s athletics, Morocco’s national women’s futsal team has officially qualified for the inaugural FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup, set to be held in 2025 in the Philippines.
The qualification marks a historic milestone for the Atlas Lionesses of futsal, who continue to blaze a trail on the African and global stage. Their World Cup berth was secured after a series of impressive performances at the CAF Women’s Futsal Championship, where Morocco demonstrated resilience, tactical discipline, and a growing dominance in the fast-paced, indoor version of football.
Led by head coach Lamia Boumehdi, the team’s qualification reflects years of investment in women’s sports infrastructure by Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF). Boumehdi, already praised for her leadership in Morocco’s women’s youth football programs, credited the players’ hard work and national support for the breakthrough.
“This is not just a victory on the pitch, it’s a victory for all Moroccan girls who dream of representing their country,” Boumehdi said after the team’s final match. “We are honored to carry our flag to the global stage and compete among the best in the world.”
The FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup, launching for the first time in 2025, will include 16 of the top national teams from around the world. Morocco will be one of three African nations represented in the tournament, underscoring the growing strength of women’s futsal on the continent.
In recent years, Morocco has emerged as a regional powerhouse in both men’s and women’s futsal. The women’s team, in particular, has benefited from increased resources, training centers, and competitive match opportunities—part of a broader national strategy to develop women’s football at all levels.
The team’s qualification comes at a time of rising enthusiasm for Moroccan women’s sports, following the senior women’s national football team’s historic run to the Round of 16 in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The futsal squad’s success adds another chapter to this narrative of empowerment and athletic excellence.
As the countdown to the World Cup begins, the Moroccan futsal players will enter a new phase of preparation, aiming not only to participate, but to compete with the ambition and determination that has become a hallmark of Moroccan football.
With the Atlas Lionesses now poised to take the global stage in the Philippines, Morocco celebrates another proud moment in its sporting evolution—where history, talent, and national pride come together under the banner of women’s sport.
