Gabonese Footballer Aaron Boupendza Dies at 28 After Tragic Fall in China

Gabonese international footballer Aaron Boupendza has died at the age of 28 after falling from the 11th floor of a building in Hangzhou, China. The incident occurred on April 16, 2025, and is currently under investigation by Chinese authorities. Boupendza was playing for Zhejiang FC at the time of his death. 

Circumstances Surrounding the Incident

Reports indicate that Boupendza had missed a team practice without explanation and had not responded to attempts at contact. His brother, who was reportedly in the apartment and had argued with him prior to the incident, is being questioned by police.  Authorities are considering possibilities such as suicide, accidental fall, or homicide.

A Prolific Career Across Continents

Born on August 7, 1996, in Moanda, Gabon, Aaron Salem Boupendza Pozzi began his professional football career with CF Mounana. He later moved to France, joining Bordeaux and spending time on loan with clubs like Pau FC, where he made a significant impact. Boupendza’s career included stints in Turkey with Hatayspor—where he was the top scorer in the 2020–21 Süper Lig season—Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Romania, the United States with FC Cincinnati, and most recently, China with Zhejiang FC. 

International Contributions

On the international stage, Boupendza earned 35 caps for the Gabon national team, scoring eight goals. He was part of the squad during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where he scored a crucial goal against Comoros.

The Gabon Football Federation expressed deep sorrow over Boupendza’s passing, highlighting his contributions to the national team and his professional achievements. Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema also paid tribute, mourning the loss of a talented striker.
