Bouznika — Malta has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, presented in 2007, as “a good basis for a definitive resolution” to the Moroccan Sahara issue. This significant endorsement was highlighted in a joint communiqué following a videoconference meeting on Wednesday between Ian Borg, Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates. The meeting coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The communiqué emphasized Malta’s recognition of the Autonomy Plan as a “serious and credible contribution to the UN-led political process” aimed at resolving the long-standing dispute. As a member of the United Nations Security Council, Malta encouraged all parties involved to demonstrate greater political will, renewing their commitment to the UN’s efforts in a spirit of realism and compromise. This stance aligns with international calls for pragmatic and sustainable solutions to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
The joint statement also highlighted the strong bilateral ties between Morocco and Malta. Both ministers praised the excellent relationship shared by the two nations and reiterated their commitment to further enhancing cooperation in various fields, including trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges. This milestone anniversary serves as a testament to the enduring partnership between Morocco and Malta, underpinned by mutual respect and shared values.
In addition to diplomatic discussions, the meeting underscored the broader significance of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan within the context of international diplomacy. By endorsing the plan as a viable pathway to resolution, Malta joins a growing number of nations that recognize Morocco’s efforts to advance a peaceful and sustainable settlement under the auspices of the United Nations.
This latest affirmation of support from Malta comes amid a broader international consensus on the importance of Morocco’s contributions to the resolution process. It reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering collaboration and maintaining a constructive dialogue with its global partners.
The 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Malta provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of their partnership while charting a path for future cooperation. Both countries expressed their shared determination to strengthen their relationship, leveraging their longstanding ties to address regional and global challenges effectively.
