Rabat — The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile, Alberto Van Klaveren Stork, reiterated his country’s steadfast support for a United Nations-led political process to resolve the Western Sahara issue. During a meeting in Rabat with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Van Klaveren Stork emphasized Chile’s endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative presented to the United Nations in April 2007.
The Chilean minister described the proposed solution as “just, pragmatic, lasting, realistic, viable, definitive, and mutually acceptable,” underscoring its alignment with United Nations efforts to achieve a resolution. A joint statement released after the meeting highlighted Chile’s recognition of the central role played by the UN in this political process and reiterated its support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756, adopted on October 31, 2024. This resolution acknowledges the “serious and credible efforts” made by Morocco to advance a political solution.
Van Klaveren Stork’s visit to Morocco includes participation in the “Congress of the Future,” a significant event held at the Moroccan Parliament on December 17 and 18. Organized in collaboration with the “Fondation des Rencontres du Futur,” the Chamber of Deputies, and the Senate of Chile, this congress aims to foster dialogue and cooperation on global challenges.
Chile’s reaffirmation of its support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative highlights the growing international recognition of the framework as a viable solution to the Western Sahara issue. It also reflects the strengthening of bilateral ties between Morocco and Chile, underpinned by shared values and a commitment to collaborative diplomacy.
The meeting in Rabat serves as another milestone in advancing the political process under the auspices of the United Nations, demonstrating Chile’s commitment to constructive engagement and Morocco’s sustained efforts to ensure a peaceful and mutually agreeable resolution.
